Shumianyu

Chapter 2 / Part 3

食 shí Food

The shumianyu equivalent for the verb 吃 chī is "食 shí."

In spoken Chinese, the verb 吃 chī is usually followed by an object, for example, 吃饭 chīfàn, 吃东西 chī dōngxī.

The character 食 shí is the radical of the character 饭 fàn, "rice, meal."

米饭 mǐfàn "cooked rice," is a spoken word.

If you go to a Chinese restaurant, you will ask for 一碗米饭 yīwǎn mǐfàn (a bowl of cooked rice) rather than 一碗米食 yīwǎn mǐshí.

餐 cān is the more formal term for fàn as suggested in the phrase: 一日三餐 yīrìsāncān: three meals a day.
