Chapter 2 / Part 6

行 xíng Transport

The word 走 zǒu, to walk is 行 xíng in shūmiànyǔ. 行走 Xíngzǒu, two synonyms form this compound meaning 'to walk.' 衣食住行 yīshízhùxíng is a word referring to daily needs. 行动 Xíngdòng--walk, move means 'action.' 行 Xíng also means to do. 行为 Xíngwéi, do-do, means behavior. The word 旅行 lǔxíng means to travel. 行车安全 xíngchēānquán means driving safety. 行人 xíngrén is pedestrian. 人行道 rénxíngdào is sidewalk. 步行 bùxíng means to walk. Its spoken form is 走路 zǒulù.

船 chuán is the colloquial form of boat. Its shūmiànyǔ form is 舟 zhōu. 舟 Zhōu is a common family name. 风雨同舟 Fēngyǔtóngzhōu means 'wind-rain-same-ship' meaning stay together no matter in the rain or in the wind.

In the spoken Chinese phrase 坐车 zuòchē or 搭车 dāchē, the shūmiànyǔ form is 乘车 chéngchē. We can also say 乘船 chéngchuán. The passanger is 乘客 chéngkè. A verb 搭乘 dāchéng is also a formal term for going to a place by means of some transportation. 搭机 dājī is more formal than 坐飞机 zuòfēijī. The term 坐机 zuòjī does not exist, however, a word with the same pronunciation: 座机 zuòjī is a formal term for the airplane for president: 总统座机 zǒngtǒngzuòjī, presidential airplane.

In the verb-object compound 开车 kāichē, to drive a car, the verb kāi has two shūmiànyǔ equivalents: 驾 jià and 驶 shǐ.

The spoken word for driver is 司机 sījī, the more formal term is: 驾驶 jiàshǐ. In this compound, both 驾 jià and 驶 shǐ are to drive a vehicle. Both characters have the radical mǎ, horse since horse used to be the major transportation.

驾 jià originally means to ride a horse cart. In airplane, there is a 正驾驶 zhèngjiàshǐ (primary pilot) and a 副驾驶 fùjiàshǐ (secondary pilot)
