In the beginner Chinese course, most of the time the teaching focus is on conversations or dialogues. This is natural because it is important to learn about everyday life and one’s needs. However, storytelling is often overlooked in the beginner level curriculum. Stories have rich cultural and linguistic information, especially children’s stories with easy to understand language that every Chinese person knows.

A Kitten Goes Fishing was such a great story that became very popular. It describes a cat family where the cat mother teaches her children that in order to succeed, one has to concentrate. The story is in a cartoon format with images. This set of materials introduces new vocabulary and major story events using the animation.

By going through the practice exercises, students will be able to tell the story in Chinese on their own. Students can act out the story as a small language project.

Students can watch the video and use it to learn Chinese. There are transcripts available in both Simplified and Traditional Chinese. There is also a vocabulary list and grammar notes. MP3 files prepared by Prof. Chao discusses the videos in depth to ensure the students understand the sentence structures. This story is a great self-study material for students who are at the end of beginner Chinese or the beginning intermediate level Chinese.

In addition to 小貓釣魚, Prof. Chao has compiled learning materials for other famous children stories including: 神筆馬良, 驕傲的將軍, 木頭姑娘, 小蝌蚪找媽媽, and so on. These scripts can serve as excellent listening and reading materials for intermediate level students.

All of these cartoons are in the public domain.
